What is “Gold-filled”?

Gold filled is different to gold plate. Gold plating is a miniscule layer of solid gold applied to a brass base, estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will wear off quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.

By comparison, gold-filled is legally required to contain at least 5% gold by weight. It rarely tarnishes and is usually a lifetime product because the gold layer bonded to the brass core is quite thick and done so under intense pressure. It does not flake off, rub off, or turn colour. Anyone who can wear gold can wear gold-filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewellery.

Gold-filled is a reasonably priced, quality alternative to solid gold.

Cleaning

When your silk jewels lose their gleam, hand wash your jewellery in warm water with a little washing detergent and leave to air-dry. This is also a great way to bring back the shine to gold-fill. Silver responds well to a jewellery polishing cloth.
